4-Week Prayer & Intercession Starter

4-Week Prayer & Intercession Starter

A practical guide for people who want to pray with depth, not just panic.

Who this is for: Beginners, returners, and intercessors who need structure. Daily time: 15–25 minutes What you need: Bible, journal, timer, one prayer partner (optional but recommended)

Week 1: Learning to Show Up

Theme: Consistency beats intensity.

Daily Rhythm (15 min)

  1. Pause (1 min) — Breathe. Say: "God, I am here."
  2. Scripture (5 min) — Read one Psalm slowly (rotate: 23, 27, 46, 91, 139)
  3. Honest prayer (5 min) — Tell God what's actually true today. No performance.
  4. One request (4 min) — Pray for one person or situation specifically.

Weekly Practice

  • Pick a prayer anchor — same time, same place, every day.
  • Tell one person: "I'm committing to 15 minutes of daily prayer this week."

Reflection Questions (end of week)

  • What time of day worked best?
  • What distracted me most?
  • Did anything surprise me in God's presence?

Week 2: Listening, Not Just Talking

Theme: Prayer is dialogue.

Daily Rhythm (20 min)

  1. Worship (3 min) — One song or spoken praise.
  2. Scripture (5 min) — Read John 10:1-16 or John 15:1-8.
  3. Lectio (7 min) — Read one verse 3 times. Ask: What word stands out? What might God be saying?
  4. Silence (3 min) — Sit without filling the space. Write any impression.
  5. Intercession (2 min) — One person, one sentence each: "Lord, bless ___ with ___."

Weekly Practice

  • Fast from phone for the first 30 minutes of your day — replace with prayer.
  • Journal one "listening" moment, even if uncertain.

Reflection Questions

  • Was silence uncomfortable? Why?
  • Did I hear anything — or learn to wait without demand?

Week 3: Praying for Others (Intercession)

Theme: Love takes someone else's name to God.

Daily Rhythm (20 min)

  1. Praise (3 min) — Declare who God is (good, faithful, near, powerful).
  2. Personal check-in (5 min) — Your needs first. Honest. Brief.
  3. Intercession list (10 min) — Use the structure below.
  4. Close (2 min) — "Your Kingdom come. Amen."

Intercession List Structure

Create four columns:

FamilyChurch/CommunityNation/WorldEnemies/Difficult people

Pray one name per column daily. Rotate through the list across the week.

Weekly Practice

  • Ask one person: "How can I pray for you this week?" — then follow up.
  • Pray for a nation or crisis in the news without cynicism.

Reflection Questions

  • Did intercession change how I felt toward anyone?
  • Where did compassion grow?

Week 4: Sustaining a Prayer Life

Theme: Build a Rule of Life, not a sprint.

Daily Rhythm (25 min)

Design your own using these blocks:

BlockTimeYour choice
Worship___ min
Scripture___ min
Listening/silence___ min
Intercession___ min
Declaration___ min

Sample declaration: "I am seated with Christ. I am sent as an ambassador. Holy Spirit, lead me today."

Weekly Practice

  • Choose a prayer partner. Meet once (call counts) to pray together 15 min.
  • Write your minimum viable prayer — the shortest version for hard days (even 3 min counts).

End-of-Guide Commitment

For the next 90 days, I commit to:

  • Daily minimum prayer: ___ minutes
  • Weekly intercession focus: _______________
  • Prayer partner: _______________
  • Review date (quarterly stocktake): _______________

Signature / Date: _______________

Appendix: When Prayer Feels Dry

  1. Don't measure by feeling. Measure by faithfulness.
  2. Shrink the practice — don't abandon it.
  3. Read prayers from Scripture aloud (Psalms, Ephesians 1:15-23, Colossians 1:9-14).
  4. Tell God you're dry. That's a prayer too.
