Finding Your 5-Fold Calling
A practical guide to Apostle, Prophet, Evangelist, Pastor, and Teacher gifts.
Based on: Ephesians 4:11-13 — Christ gave gifts to equip the saints for works of service, until we reach unity and maturity.
Purpose: Help you identify your primary and secondary 5-fold leanings — not to label yourself, but to steward your calling.
The Five Gifts — Quick Profiles
Apostle
Core impulse: Extend, pioneer, architect systems and movements. You might be an apostle if: You start things, see the big picture, build teams, think multi-generationally, get restless maintaining status quo. Shadow side: Overwork, control, impatience with process. Biblical examples: Paul, Peter, Junia.
Prophet
Core impulse: Hear God, call people to alignment, expose what is hidden. You might be a prophet if: You sense injustice quickly, receive impressions, value truth over comfort, long for holiness and encounter. Shadow side: Harshness, isolation, speaking without love. Biblical examples: Elijah, Anna, Agabus.
Evangelist
Core impulse: Communicate good news, invite people in, catalyse decisions. You might be an evangelist if: You love sharing faith, connect easily with non-believers, celebrate conversions, tell stories well. Shadow side: Shallow follow-up, performance, neglecting depth. Biblical examples: Philip, the woman at the well (John 4).
Pastor
Core impulse: Care, protect, nurture, create belonging. You might be a pastor if: People naturally confide in you, you notice who's missing, you value stability and healing, you shepherd through presence. Shadow side: Avoiding conflict, enabling, burnout from over-care. Biblical examples: Timothy, Barnabas.
Teacher
Core impulse: Explain, clarify, systematise truth for understanding. You might be a teacher if: You love study, make complex things clear, value accuracy, equip others through frameworks. Shadow side: Pride in knowledge, coldness, information without transformation. Biblical examples: Apollos, Priscilla.
Note: Most people are a blend — one primary, one secondary. All five are needed in healthy community.

Stewardship Questions
For your primary gift, answer:
- Where is it active? (Work, church, family, community?)
- Where is it dormant? (Suppressed by fear, culture, or wrong environment?)
- Who needs what I carry? (Name 3 people or contexts.)
- What is one step to develop it this month?
- Who can mentor me in this gift?
Team Mapping Exercise
If you lead a team, small group, or family project — map the five gifts:
| Gift | Who carries it? | How do we honour it? |
|---|---|---|
| Apostle | ||
| Prophet | ||
| Evangelist | ||
| Pastor | ||
| Teacher |
Gaps: Which gifts are missing? Who needs inviting? Overload: Who is carrying too much? How do we redistribute?
Dual Realm Application
Your 5-fold gift works in both church and marketplace:
| Gift | Sunday | Monday |
|---|---|---|
| Apostle | Church planting, vision | Startup, org design, expansion |
| Prophet | Worship, intercession | Ethics, culture-shaping, truth-telling |
| Evangelist | Outreach events | Sales, communication, bridge-building |
| Pastor | Small groups | HR, mentoring, team care |
| Teacher | Sermons, classes | Training, documentation, coaching |
30-Day Development Plan
My primary gift: _______________
| Week | Focus | Action |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Observe | Notice where your gift shows up naturally |
| 2 | Study | Read one chapter on your gift (Ephesians 4, 1 Cor 12-14) |
| 3 | Practice | One intentional act of your gift weekly |
| 4 | Debrief | Ask two people: "When have you seen this gift in me?" |
Closing Prayer
Holy Spirit, You distribute gifts as You choose. I receive mine without comparison and without shame. Equip me to serve the body — in church, in work, in every corner You send me to. Make me mature, not just gifted. Amen.
