Listening to God in Community

Listening to God in Community

A guide to hearing God's voice with humility — and testing it with others.

Kingdom Core Value: God is still speaking. (Value #7)

Warning: Private "revelation" without community discernment has damaged more people than honest doubt ever has. This guide protects both.

Part 1: How God Speaks

God speaks through multiple channels. None replaces Scripture. All are tested by Scripture and community.

ChannelExampleTest question
ScriptureA verse that keeps returningDoes it align with the whole counsel of Scripture?
Inner impressionA persistent sense of directionIs it consistent over time? Does it produce fruit?
ProphecyA spoken word from another believerDoes it edify, exhort, and comfort (1 Cor 14:3)?
CircumstancesOpen and closed doorsAm I interpreting circumstances with bias?
DreamsVivid or recurring dreamsDoes it align with God's character and Word?
CounselWise mentors, friendsDo multiple trusted voices converge?

Red flag: Any "word" that produces fear, control, exclusivity ("only I can tell you"), or shortcuts around obedience.

Part 2: Personal Discernment Checklist

Before acting on an impression, ask:

  1. Character check: Does this lead me toward Christlikeness?
  2. Scripture check: Is there biblical precedent or principle?
  3. Peace check: Does the Holy Spirit bear witness with peace (even if afraid)?
  4. Fruit check: Will this produce love, joy, peace, patience, kindness?
  5. Timing check: Is this "now" — or am I rushing?
  6. Motivation check: Am I seeking God's glory or my comfort/control?
  7. Community check: Have I submitted this to trusted people?

Score: If you fail 2+ checks, pause. Don't act yet.

Part 3: How to Receive a Prophetic Word

When someone gives you a word:

Do:

  • Say thank you
  • Write it down
  • Pray over it
  • Submit it to 2–3 mature believers
  • Wait for confirmation through fruit and circumstances

Don't:

  • Treat it as automatic command
  • Make major life decisions on one word alone
  • Carry words that violate Scripture or conscience
  • Let it replace personal relationship with God

If a word brings condemnation: Reject it. Romans 8:1 stands. God convicts; He does not crush.

Part 4: How to Give a Prophetic Word

Before you speak:

  • Ask: Am I serving this person or performing?
  • Prefer edification over mystery.
  • Use "I sense..." not "Thus saith the Lord..." unless you are extraordinarily sure and accountable.

Format (simple):

"I feel God may be highlighting [theme] for you. Does that resonate? I could be wrong — take it to God."

After you speak:

  • Release control. It's their discernment now.
  • Do not hold them hostage to your word.

Part 5: Community Discernment Meeting Template

Use with 3–5 mature believers. 30–45 minutes.

Person sharing: _______________ Decision/impression to discern: _______________

Round 1 — Clarify (5 min)

The person shares briefly. Group asks clarifying questions only. No advice yet.

Round 2 — Listen to God (10 min)

Silence together. Each person journals impressions.

Round 3 — Share (15 min)

Each person shares:

  • "I sense..."
  • "Scripture that comes to mind..."
  • "A question I'd ask..."

No one dominates. No voting on God's will.

Round 4 — Synthesise (10 min)

The person receiving counsel summarises:

  • What converged?
  • What conflicted?
  • What is my next obedient step?

Close — Prayer

Group prays blessing and clarity. No pressure for immediate decision.

Part 6: When the Community Disagrees

Disagreement is not failure. It may mean:

  • Wait
  • More information is needed
  • The word was partial
  • The timing isn't now

Default posture: When in doubt, don't rush. Obedience to clear Scripture always beats urgency.

Closing Reminder

"Do not quench the Spirit. Do not treat prophecies with contempt but test them all; hold fast what is good." — 1 Thessalonians 5:19-21

God still speaks. We still listen — together.
